Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM)

ReCoMaP Result Area 4

ReCoMaP's support to ICZM Structures and Processes has a very strong regional aspect. For an update on objectives and latest activities, please make sure that you also visit Regional Approaches.

Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) is at the core of ReCoMaP. The Programme supports national and local stakeholders in the application of ICZM Principles in Coastal Development Planning and Management. The following key factors are crucial for sustainable, effective and efficient ICZM:

  1. Development, understanding and application of ICZM approaches and tools;
  2. Functional frameworks of ICZM institutional actors and stakeholders;
  3. Central ICZM coordinative bodies such as National or Local ICZM Committees, and
  4. ICZM information management, networking and communication.

Among other activities, ReCoMaP provides specific Tools and Training for ICZM Policy Development, ICZM Planning Processes and ICZM Monitoring.

ReCoMaP supports the strengthening of already existing or the establishing of new National ICZM Committees in all focus countries. The initial task of these committees is the review and updating of existing, or the development of new National ICZM Plans. These National ICZM Plans will coordinate Coastal Development in the countries of the WIO Region and may, through the establishing of a multilateral dialogue lead to a set of ICZM Principles in the Region.

Sustainable coastal development, based on ICZM principles requires adequate ICZM Monitoring. The establishing of such ICZM Monitoring systems is thus another component, which ReCoMaP supports in all focus countries.

As a specific planning tool, and upon request from the countries, ReCoMaP also provides support to improving Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) in coastal zones.
